CBD: What is Cannabidiol?

Cannabidiol or CBD can be a confusing topic if you're new to the cannabis industry and want to learn about cannabinoids. In this guide, we explain:

  • What is CBD?
  • What does CBD do?
  • What feelings can CBD trigger?
  • What are the benefits of CBD?
  • Is CBD a drug?
  • Is CBD Legal?

What is CBD?

CBD is a cannabinoid that is found in cannabis, but unlike its cousin Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), it's not intoxicating. However, it is the second most common of the hundreds of cannabinoids found in marijuana and hemp plants after THC.

There are hundreds of cannabinoids out there! Read more about CBD, CBC, CBG, or CBL today.

What does CBD do?

Cannabinoids affect the body via the endocannabinoid system and bind to its receptors to provoke a variety of reactions. While the psychoactive properties of THC are believed to stem from its strong binding to both CB1 and CB2 receptors, experts aren't certain how CBD interacts with the endocannabinoid system! It's generally believed that CBD triggers a weak binding to the CB1 and CB2 receptors, which is why it doesn't trigger the same reaction as THC.

While there are a variety of claims about the effects of CBD, more research is needed to fully understand the impact of CBD Oil on the human body. CBD might potentially be effective in treating certain epilepsy syndromes, including Dravet Syndrome and Lennox-Gastuat Syndrome. CBD emerged on the pharmaceutical market as an ingredient in Epidiolex, the first approved drug containing CBD for the treatment of the aforementioned conditions.

What are the benefits of CBD?

One of the generally accepted benefits of CBD is that it is one of many cannabinoids that contribute to the entourage effect. Aside from these benefits, the evidence is purely anecdotal when it comes to whether CBD can treat chronic pain, relieve inflammation, or alleviate anxiety. While certain animal studies are promising, more evidence is needed before CBD can be attributed benefits.

Is CBD a drug? Is CBD legal?

CBD products, like CBD oil, are readily available in the EU, but that doesn't always mean they are legally available in all regions. Some countries ban all forms of CBD, while others have strict guidelines for CBD products. You should always inform yourself about your country's laws before purchasing CBD.

Conversely, CBD contained in marijuana products may be considered a drug in certain countries and is legal.
