What is the history and origin of Central Asian landrace varieties?

Shiva GodCentral Asian landraces are prized because they are believed to be the OG varieties on the planet; that is, the strains from which all other strains are descended. In Central Asia - which includes countries such as Pakistan and Afghanistan cannabis is even mentioned in the religious history of the Hindus.

They believe that Shiva's favorite food was bhang which contains cannabis. In Central Asia, cannabis has been used for thousands of years by the indigenous people of the regions for religious rites and medicinal properties. From there, cannabis was spread to other parts of the world for other purposes, including its psychoactive effects.

What is the difference between the Central Asian landrace and other strains?

There are many differences between the Central Asian marijuana landraces and other strains but probably the biggest difference is that Central Asian landrace strains are the most popular because of their high resin content. Due to their abundance of resin, they are often used to make hashish and other concentrates. In addition to this unique characteristic, Central Asian landraces are also some of the most commonly bred strains in the world, giving rise to many of the hybrids you probably know and love.

Central Asian landrace varieties you should know about

Here are some of the three most popular strains to know:

Hindu Kush, also known as Hindi Kush
This pure Indica Hindu Kush strain was harvested in the Himalayas and has survived countless years in a harsh climate. Perhaps it's because it has such a thick coating of protective trichomes that it is prized by cannabis connoisseurs and hash makers. Hindu Kush has a sweet sandalwood flavor and aroma and a moderately high THC content of around 19% .

Afghan Kush
This Afghan landrace variety originates from the same mountainous region as Hindu Kush and has been a major source of hashish over the centuries. As much as cannabis users love Afghan Kush, growers also love it for its large flower cones and high yields. Afghan Kush (World of Seeds) has a moderate THC content (15 %) and a woody flavor and aroma.

Pakistani Kush, also known as Pakistani Chitral Kush or PCK
Pakistan Chitral Kush is unique for many reasons, but one of the biggest is that it is a 'selected landrace'. This means that it is carefully inbred to enhance some of its most unique characteristics. It is named after a town in Pakistan called Chitral named Chitral. There, its resin is cultivated to produce concentrates such as hashish. Cannabis connoisseurs love this strain for its caramel-meets-berry flavor and its THC content (18 %) .
