Hawaiian landrace variety

What are Hawaiian landrace tribes?

In our guide to landrace varieties, we have traversed the globe - from Mexican landrace varieties to Thailand, from African landrace varieties to linktextJamaika. Now it's time to turn the attention to the landrace varieties from Hawaii landrace varieties. These varieties have been cultivated in some of the most unique landscapes in the world, and it's these landscapes that make them so hardy. In this guide, we'll share everything we know about these tropical marijuana plants.

What does "Hawaiian landrace strain" mean?

When we talk about Hawaiian , we are referring to strains that originated in Hawaii. Although the seeds may have been brought from other parts of the world, these seeds quickly developed plants that melded with the archipelago's unique landscape and volcanic soil. Hawaiian landrace varieties are known for their sweet flavor, tangy-lemon aroma and beautiful flower buds that are streaked with orange threads.

What makes Hawaiian Landrace varieties unique?

Hawaiian Landrace varieties are characterized by their uniqueness. Because they grow on a chain of islands, there is diversity between the different plants. On the main island of Hawaii for example, a delicious indica landrace strain called Puna Buddaz. On the island of Kauai, just northwest of Hawaii, you'll find a sativa landrace strain called Kaui'i Electric, which has been cultivated on the slopes of Mt. Wai'ale'ale. Each island has its own unique landrace. However, what unites the Hawaiian landrace strains is their delicious tropical flavor and spicy undertones that make them a real treat if you're lucky enough to try them.

What is the history of cannabis in Hawaii?

It's no surprise that marijuana thrived well in Hawaii once the seeds made their way to the islands - the soil is rich in minerals, the air is humid and tropical, and there's more than enough rain to sustain these plants that grow up to 365 centimeters tall. But how did the seeds get to the island? The truth is that we don't know exactly.

A newspaper published in 1842 is the first reference to marijuana on the islands. The locals called it pakalolo, or narcotic tobacco. Although it originally had negative connotations, this name is still used for marijuana on the island today. Although 1842 is the first record of the plant, it was definitely present on the island long before that.

There are three possible ways that marijuana could have come to the island could have come to the island. The first theory is that it was brought by Polynesian immigrants when they sailed from Asia to the islands in the 4th century. The second theory is that cannabis was brought by Mexican vaqueros, or cowboys, who arrived in the late 18th century to work in cattle ranches. The third theory is that a European horticulturalist named Joseph Banks brought marijuana to the island in the mid-to-late 1800s. If the latter theory is true, it is possible that the Hawaiian Duckfoot landrace strain is one of the seeds sent to the island by Banks.

Our favorite Hawaiian landrace varieties

The thing about Hawaiian landrace varieties is that it's hard to pick a favorite. They're all beautiful with their bright green leaves and orange hairs, and they're all equally delicious and flavorful. In no particular order, here are the five landrace strains you should definitely try if you can get your hands on them:

  1. Hawaiian Sativa
    Sativa

The name may not be particularly creative, but it doesn't have to be, because this 100% pure sativa trades creativity for flavor. Its sweet, tropical flavors are complemented by pineapple undertones that add nuance to the spicy notes and sourness. It's truly a flavor profile that we haven't seen outside of Hawaiian landraces on the market. Hawaiian Sativa is also visually intriguing and is known for its banana-like flowers covered in orange tendrils. Like many landraces, her potency varies from a moderate 14% to a high 21% THC, making her enjoyable for both new cannabis users and seasoned enthusiasts. While Hawaiian Sativa can certainly stand on its own, it has also spawned a number of popular hybrids, including Kona Gold.

  2. Kauai'i Electric
    Sativa

If you're looking for a strain that combines the sweetness of a Hawaiian landrace variety with the earthy spice of a strain like OG Kush, then look no further than Kauai'i Electric. Although it originated on the slopes of Mt. Wai'ale'ale, it has since been grown and bred elsewhere on the island, but maintains its tropical berry flavor with spicy, herbaceous undertones regardless of where it is grown. This strain has moderately high THC levels of 16-18%, but it is unique in this list because it also contains 4% CBD.

  3. Puna Buddaz
    Indica

This 100% indica landrace strain originates from the rainiest part of the Hawaiian Islands - the Puna District. Like all the other landrace strains on this list, Puna Buddaz is delicious, but you'll notice a slightly different, skunky note compared to the others. Some cannabis enthusiasts have even described it as overly sweet and earthy, like a strawberry that's been left on the bush too long. While its flavor profile may be a bit peculiar - though not quite as peculiar as some Diesel strains - it remains just as refreshing as any other Hawaiian landrace strain. Puna Buddaz has a moderate THC potency, leveling off at around 16%.

  4. Maui Wowie
    Sativa-dominant hybrid

Usually, landrace strains are either 100% Sativa or 100% Indica, but with Maui Wowie, also known as Maui Waui, nothing is ordinary. This unique landrace strain is 80% sativa and 20% indica and has a colorful history. It is said that during the Vietnam War, veterans and activists fled to Hawaii and the native Hawaiians were not pleased. However, one night at a social gathering, the two groups came together as the native Hawaiians shared a strain that was named Maui Wowie due to its delicious flavor and still is today. Whether this is true or not, this flower lives up to the legend with its citrus and lavender scent mixed with pineapple flavor - likely due to the limonene in its terpene profile. That said, if you're looking for another reason to say "wowie" when you try this strain - it can have a THC content of up to 28%.

  5. Hawaii '78
    Indica

Whether you call this strain Hawaii '78 or Sweet Lady of Wa'ahole, both refer to the sativa landrace variety. Rumor on the island chain has it that the mango pineapple flavor and spicy, earthy aromas were popular with the film crew of Jurassic Park, and whether this is true or not, its popularity extends to cannabis users far beyond the movie set. In addition to a sweet, sensual experience, Hawaii '78 also offers a low THC content of 10-12%, making it one of the less potent strains on our list.

Buying Hawaiian landrace strains

Here's where we have to break your heart - Hawaiian landrace strains are not easy to find. In fact, it's possible that you're unlikely to come across any of these landrace strains outside of the islands. But that's exactly what makes Hawaiian landraces so desirable. If you happen to see one of these landraces, you should definitely go for it, because if you don't, someone else definitely will. Some producers have tried to breed Hawaiian landrace varieties, but these are no longer pure landraces as we know.
